How Hackers are controlling your Amazon Echo or Google Home with Laser powered light from 100 meters
Your mobile devices use voice authentication; hence they are less susceptible to such attacks.
Know that;
· Recently it is discovered that smart speakers like Amazon Echo Dot, Google Home and others can easily be hacked with the aid of laser-powered light commands.
· Not just the speakers, other devices like smartphones and Facebook’ portal device might also be easily hacked with the light command from 100 meters.
· This can be fixed by including a light shield across the microphone says researches or using 2 non — identical microphones on the other side to listen to voice commands.
Researchers through Wired have found that it is likely to “Speak” to a device like as Google Home, Amazon Echo Smart speakers and Apple HomePod with the Light commands. This can be done with a laser pointer at the target device’s microphone with a telephoto lens and a tripod that can alter the intensity to a particular frequency. This can trick the device’s Voice Assistant into light responding that hit the microphone’s membrane as if there is a light. In many cases, just flooding the light will be ample to get it to respond to the commands.

These “Light commands” will be totally calm and from a 250 ft away, it can be transmitted. According to researchers, it is said that hackers might also make use of the infrared laser, which is not seen to the unassisted vision to control the smart speakers.
Luckily, there are a few restrictions too. First, trying a laser-based attack might need a piece of special equipment, even though most of them are quite seen on Amazon and are not very costly either. The aimed device should be in the line of sight so that the laser will be targeted at a particular part of the device’s microphone.
But, it is not just the smart speakers that are susceptible to these commands. Smartphones, Facebook portal, Tablets and other devices that use Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems or MEMS microphones and include a voice assistant which is also found to be vulnerable to such attacks. The testing was quite a few famous devices like Samsung Galaxy S9, iPhone XR, 6th Gen iPad and Google Pixel 2.
Here: You can know the best steps for echo dot setup.
According to researchers, this can be prevented by placing the light shield in front of the microphone and having 2 microphones on the other sides to hear voice commands.
A statement has sent to WIRED that both Google Amazon has said that they are going through the research paper. Apple, but declined the comment.
